For almost 20 years, Heath has spent most of his professional career in the fire/life safety domain. Starting as a field inspector Grinnell Fire Protection as a sprinkler inspector later as a sprinkler and fire alarm inspector for Simplex. Moving into sales then eventually working currently as a systems engineer and industry support liaison between the Simplex product and the DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland construction market.

Steve Evers
I am the principal of the EES Group providing electrical design and consulting services. I am also the director of training for The Alarm Academy. I am a master electrician and professional engineer in DC, MD and VA and level 4 certified in NICET. I am a graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in electrical engineering. I have met some great people while serving on the AFAA board for the past two years.

Nick Franko – grew up in the fire and security industry working for his family’s company in New Jersey. He’s worked on and around fire alarm equipment for the better part of 20 years, from troubleshooting and service to design and installation, eventually moving into management. In 2016, he and his family moved down to Virginia where he took a position a running Urban Alarm servicing the DMV’s fire and security needs. In 2017, he made the transition to Siemens, focusing on fire alarm sales and has since taken on the role of sales manager. He lives in Northern Virginia with his wife, son and dog.

Peter Milburn – I started my career as an electrical apprentice in 1974 working for a company in Leeds, UK.

Got started in the fire alarm industry in 1885 working as an install technician for one of the biggest security companies in the UK. I transitioned to the serviced dept. in 1887.

I moved to the USA in 1996.

I started working for a small electrical contractor in Fairfax, Fire Protective Systems, working for them for 8 years as a fire alarm technician.

I moved from there to Alarm Tech Solutions in 2004, working initially as a senior technician before transitioning in to the role of account manager in 2012.

I left Alarm tech in 2016 to work for Life Safety Systems, my current role with them is Fire Alarm Technical Manager.

I live in Bristow VA. With my wife Marsha and our 2 dogs.

I enjoy working on my 1962 Cadillac Convertible, Travelling and Blues Music, which we often combine with the travel to go to blues festivals around the country.

Thomas A. Newcomb– I have been in the fire alarm and electrical industry for 20 years. As a son to an Electrical Contractor, Thomas began installing Electrical and Fire Alarm Systems, in 1999. While working as an Apprentice Electrician Thomas obtained a Journeyman Electrical License, in 2004. Following that, Thomas obtained a job laying out Fire Alarm Systems while pursuing an Electrical Engineering degree, in 2006. In May of 2007, Thomas graduated from Capitol College with a Bachelors of Science Degree in the field of Electrical Engineering. Thomas established TAN Fire Alarms in 2010 and has steadily grown the company, while assisting electrical contractors and end-users with their fire alarm needs. Currently a NICET Level IV certified Fire Alarm Systems Engineering Technician, Thomas is looking to give back to a fire alarm industry and help with the local organization.

Lisa Sheriff, SET – Current Position on AFAA Board Secretary

licensed DC Journeyman Electrician. She has been a part time instructor with Local 26 IBEW and graduated the NTI Instructor program in 2010, is NICET Level IV Certified, and has been certified since 2005. She has been a Service Technician, Large Project Foreman, and Life Safety Superintendent. Lisa has recently transitioned into the office and currently is in charge of the Life Safety Division for Freestate Electrical Service. She has the overall responsibility of estimating, placing man power, project managing and closing out all types of life safety and electrical projects. She has been a project manager recently of a Fire Alarm & Mass Notification System at Walter Reed Bethesda Medical Campus that won the 2015 WBC Craftsmanship Award for Fire Alarm and Mass Notification Systems. This will be her second WBC Craftsmanship award; her first was for a project installation foreman in 2005. Lisa grew up in Rockville and served in the U.S Navy. She joined Local 26 in 1986 after returning home. Lisa graduated the NJATC Apprentice program in 1992.

She and her family reside in Calvert County Maryland.

Aaron Smith– I have over 20 years in the fire service working as a volunteer and career firefighter in West Virginia and Ohio before coming to Maryland to work in fire prevention and code enforcement. He has served as a fire inspector, plans examiner and as the Fire Marshal for the City of Rockville. He currently works for Montgomery County Maryland as a Fire Marshal/Plans Examiner in addition to coordinating training on their electronic plan review and submission programs. He also serves on the Maryland State Fire Code Update Committee and the Maryland State Fire Marshal Subcommittee working as part of the carbon monoxide alarm task force and the legislative affairs work group.

He is an NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist and hold NICET certificates in fire alarm as well. Aaron also works as an educator in emergency management owning a consulting business based in Ohio which reviews emergency operations plans, designs and conducts hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction exercises for first responders and the military. He lives in Washington, DC and is an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

David Steury– I am a 1994 graduate of the University of Maryland’s Fire Protection Engineering program and hold P.E. licenses in DC, Maryland and Virginia. David has been involved in the fire protection industry for over 30 years and active in the AFAA since the mid-nineties. He was elected to the MD-DC-VA AFAA Board of Directors in 2016, serving as the Treasurer since 2016 and Vice President since 2018. He is the Owner of MetroTech Systems, which provides fire alarm systems for new construction and building renovations as well as testing, inspection and maintenance of existing systems. 

Prior to forming MetroTech Systems in 2001, David was a consulting engineer with Hauf, Steury and Associates and Rolf Jensen. He began his fire protection career as a volunteer firefighter in high school at the New Baltimore Volunteer Fire Department in Warrenton, Virginia followed by serving as a live-in volunteer firefighter at Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department in Prince George’s County, Maryland while attending the University of Maryland. David is married with a daughter and stepson and lives in Alexandria, Virginia

Dana Wood – Entered the IBEW Local 26 Apprenticeship in August 1985 and Graduated In 1989 as a Journeyman Electrician, In 1995 He began working exclusively on Fire Alarm Installations for Truland through Tech Inc., He then moved into the Fire Alarm Project Management in early 2005 and received his NICET 4 Certification in September 2005 (only having sat for 3 tests). Dana in August 2007 Started with Emcor Combustioneer and was in charge of their Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Service and Testing Group until 2013 when the Group was moved to Emcor Dynalectric and currently is the Field Operations Manager for the Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Service Dept. Dana also holds Electrical Master Licenses in MD, DC, and VA.

Being married with 4 Kids takes up most of the free time, He attends Boy Scout Troop 429 in Chesapeake Beach, MD with his youngest son who is working towards becoming an Eagle Scout, Dana is also volunteering as the Committee Chair for the Troop.
